MMS & UN news December 2013

Dear sisters, Associates and Friends,

“If we look back to the year 2013, it is a year full of achievements and I am very proud of the colleagues”said the UN Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Wu Hongbo. The two important inter-governmental processes, as a result of the implementation of the Rio+20 follow up are the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals and the Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing. We were involved in these two UN processes from the beginning.

Call for human rights in core of post-2015 Development Agenda:As governments meet at the United Nations to debate aspects of the sustainable development agenda to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015, over 300 civil society organizations from all parts of the world have come together to demand human rights be integrated into every aspect of the new framework. Together they have issued a joint statement, advanced by a caucus of human rights organizations convened by the Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR), Amnesty International and the Association for Women’s Rights in Development. It is part of a series of advocacy activities in New York and across the globe to ensure that human rights are not marginalized from the operational aspects of the sustainable development agenda.

The Open Working Group:  the 6th session was held from Dec. 9-13 and the topic was Finance, Trade and Global Governance. MMS gave a statement on Global Governance emphasizing to uphold three rights: Human rights, Right to Development and Rights of Mother Earth. It is posted in our web :  The next OWG  are from  Jan. 6-10 and  Feb. 3-7, 2014.

Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing. On 13th December the co chair of the Committee of Experts, Pertit Majanen, the Ambassador from Finland, invited a few NGOs to give our concerns and ideas to the group. We were 16 in the group and had a very lively informal discussion and raised many issues affecting the poorest in our society.

Women needed in Peace talks: The negotiators are recognizing the need for women’s participation in the peace talks on Syria in Geneva from Jan 22nd. Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations-Arab League special envoy on Syria, is responsible for preparing the peace talks and will be leading the discussions. No commitment has been made as to whether women will actually sit at the negotiating table between the Syrian government and the opposition. UN Women, with support from the Netherlands, is holding a meeting on Jan. 12-13 to bring together women leaders from inside and outside Syria who are committed to a peaceful political solution. It is critical to transform the conversation to include women and other peace activists who are working for peace now.

Wish you all a peace filled New Year 2014!
