March had been a busy month at the UN, International Women’s day, World Water day, World TB day etc. besides the 2 weeks long Commission on the Status of Women.
CSW 61: With the Theme“Women’s Economic Empowerment in the changing world of work,” Women’s unpaid care work and 23% pay gap were highlighted. More than 3800 attended from around the world. Besides the official CSW sessions, there were 290 parallel events by member States and 600+ by Civil Society. One event was on purple economy, the speakers based on a research highlighted the benefit of investing in women as profitable from a gender, economic and political point of view.
Respecting the strong call for collaborative submissions at the UN, MMS written statement was done jointly with several other organizations. MMS have cosponsored few parallel events and Celine spoke at 2 events organized by Temple of Understanding: one was with the DPI/NGO special event for CSW 61. New website on environmental human rights defenders. On March 6, Universal Rights Group and several other partners announced the launch of a new web portal with information and links for environmental human rights defenders – that is, those who defend the environment and the human rights that depend on it. As Global Witness has described, environmental defenders are increasingly under threat: at least 185 were killed in 2015 alone. http://www.environment-rights.org/
Intern:We welcomed our intern/ MMS youth rep -Jillann Mahmoud, a junior at Marymount Manhattan College. She is excited and joined the UN DPI orientation for youth just before the CSW in March. She is with us till Dec 2017 for her part time internship at the request of Prof: Andre who coordinates Internship in Marymount.
Special for March is Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Some of the targets:-
5.1: End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere
5.2: Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation
5.3: Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation
5.4: Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate
5.5: Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life
5.6: Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programmed of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences
