August 2018 MMS & UN News

Dear Readers,

August is the lightest month at the United Nations though, here are some of the highlights:

Appointment of new High Commissioner of Hum n rights. We are delighted to have Michelle Bachelet former Chilean president and the first Executive Director of UN women to the UN (Geneva) in her new role as High Commissioner of Hum n rights. She is familiar to us at the UN as the head of UN women and we recall her words, “Women’s strength, women’s industry, women’s wisdom are humankind’s greatest untapped resource” and now using her voice as women’s advocate there is hoping to promote human rights.

If you violate the law in any country you will be punished, then the question is, is the law based on human rights? For this you need to know What Human rights is?  here is a link to those want to know more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c26_H2RTaYI

Demise of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan: As the world and specially Ghana mourned the passing of Kofi Annan, an icon of world peace, the UN lowered the UN Flag half as a sign of respect. The current SG Antonio Guterres payed tribute at the UN by giving a statement and said “he was one of the best among us” he then signed the book of Condolences. After the official signing of the Diplomats, I too got an opportunity to sign the book for all MMS and Associates.

67 Annual conference of the Department of Public Information (DPI):  With the Theme “We the peoples together finding Global Solutions for Global Problems, the DPI conference was held on 22 and 23 August in New York. After 2014 it was the first DPI Conference in New York and two MMS associates and a few of my friends were able to participate in it. I was part of the  planning committee in the logistic team to guide the volunteers and people new to the UN. There were many events and exhibits during the conference and an outcome document was adopted to be submitted to the UN General Assembly in September.  https://outreach.un.org/ngorelations/content/outcome-document  . Besides the more than 40% of the 67th DPI/NGO Conference youth participants brought new energy and ideas besides produced the “We the Future – A Youth Declaration.”   https://outreach.un.org/ngorelati…/content/youth-declaration

Sharing from Marge Sexton for the Associates participants is attached.

The mayor of Salt lake City, (the  First American city besides NY) announced to host the Conference in 2019 in Salt lake city USA.

UPCOMING events:  The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (New year @UN) will open on 18 September 2018 under the presidency of H.E: María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés.

New Intern:  Diana Marin is an interesting young woman I met at a Contemplative Ecology session and at my invitation she attended the 67 UN DPI conference. She got interested and will begin her internship with MMS at the UN in September with her many skills and gifts.

Warmly,

Celine Paramunda
