Speaking from the UN…

OWG 11th    : The 11th session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, were held from May 5-9. The Co-chairs of the OWG have produced a new version of possible goals and targets. There are now 16 focus areas (possible GOALS) with under each some 6 – 12 targets, almost all time-bound and quantified. In comparison to a legal text, the proposal for global goals will not be legally binding – as the MDGs are – and the co-chairs aim at simple targets of 1 line and all conditions should be addressed in indicators for these targets.  The Co-Chairs feel that we need a lot more

– Developing countries voice various concerns and priorities on differentiation, means of implementation, global partnership and a narrative in the 9th session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals –

The first of five intergovernmental consultation sessions in the second phase of the United Nations Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) took place on 3-5 March in New York.  The eight OWG sessions thus far constituted the “input” phase.  They took place over the course of one year, from March 2013 to February 2014.

The OWG is a key process for the follow-up of the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 (Rio+20).  The Co-chairs of the OWG are Ambassadors Macharia Kamau of Kenya and Csaba Korosi of Hungary.

 Thanks a lot to all those who sent their feedback to the last newsletter, it affirms that we are together.

The month of November, too, was busy with preparatory meetings and advocacy for the Post 2015 Development agenda which is the highlight of the coming year. By September, 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the next 15-20 years will be established while the MDGs will meet its target year 2015. Unlike the MDGs, the SDGs are to be universal and integrating the three dimensions of Development, namely: Social, Economic and Environmental.
