Global Campaign to change the culture of food waste initiated by UNEP & FAO:-1.3 Billion Tons of food wasted or lost each year, which is sufficient to feed the hungry.  More info: www.Think,Eat,Save . Nearly one-third of the people in Bangladesh lack access to nutritious food, and nongovernmental organizations in the country are seeking to hold the government accountable for food scarcity through a constitutional amendment.

Informal Thematic Debate on International Migration

On 19th May a debate on international Migration and development was conducted at the UN in preparation to a General Assembly dialogue in 2013. Secretary General (SG) asked “how many of you are living out side of your country of origin?”  He said including you and me today 3% of the world’s population approximately 214 million live out side the countries of their birth. Girls and women now account for nearly half of all international migrants and 16% of it are under the age 20.

There are positive and negative effects of migration. Officially recorded remittance flows to developing countries totaled US $ 325 billion in 2010.Migrants vary from  professionals to those doing 3D jobs- (dangerous, difficult and dirty) face heightened risk of  discrimination  and more vulnerable to abuse of fundamental human rights. Rio +20 UN Conference

The UN conference which took place at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, popularly called Rio+ 20 was a very enriching experience for MMS delegates Molly Vadaken and Celine P who  participated in the event.

20 years after the 1992 Earth Summit,100+ world leaders and more than12,000 individuals were reported to have registered to attend the official Rio+20 event  and another 30,000 participated in one or more of the up to 3000 unofficial parallel events and 500 events organized by governments that took place throughout Rio de Janeiro. Besides at the peoples’ summit held in Flamingo Park (same venue as of 1992) several thousand activists, local and indigenous people and religious gathered to educate, protest and encourage one another for a  just and sustainable future.
